Mobile Lab Strengthens Food Adulteration Testing in the Idukki

Report

The Food Safety Department in Kerala’s Idukki district has strengthened mobile lab inspections to detect food adulteration. The public can bring food samples—either from home or purchased from shops—for free testing. In January, officials conducted 304 tests and identified 10 substandard samples. They stated that people would receive test results within 10 minutes.

The mobile lab team, consisting of a driver, lab assistant, and technical assistant, conducts at least 15 tests daily. These tests detect microbes, chemical contaminants, unauthorized food colours, pH levels in water and milk, and coliform content. Commonly tested food items are Milk, water, vegetables, coconut oil, and more. However, authorities report that most violations are detected in coconut oil. For queries, contact 04862 220066.
