PGI Study Urges India to Replace trans-fat with Healthier Oils

Report

The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER)’s  Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health released a study emphasizing India’s urgent need to shift from trans fats to healthier edible oils. The report, ‘Roadmap for Replacing Trans-Fats with Healthy Edible Oil in India,’ was presented at a national stakeholder meeting aimed at accelerating trans-fat elimination efforts.

Non-Communicable Diseases and Trans Fat’s Role

The study highlighted the alarming rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in India, particularly cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which contribute significantly to deaths. It identified high trans-fat intake, especially from partially hydrogenated oils like vanaspati and processed foods, as a major contributor to the health crisis.

Need for Complete Elimination of Trans Fat

Although the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had set limits on trans fats, the report stressed that complete elimination remains an “unfulfilled agenda.” The study, which included stakeholder interviews and secondary data analysis, examined fat consumption patterns and evaluated existing policies. It also explored strategies for promoting healthier oil production and reducing dependence on imported palm oil, which is high in saturated fats, in favour of encouraging domestic production of healthier alternatives.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Better Health

“Transitioning from trans fats to healthier oils is critical for improving public health in India,” stated Prof. JS Thakur, the project’s principal investigator. “This requires a comprehensive approach involving regulatory reforms, increased domestic production, public awareness, and collaboration with the industry.”

Launch of ‘Healthy Oil Consortium’ and Stakeholder Collaboration

During the meeting, national experts from organizations like the National Institute of Nutrition, FSSAI, and the Ministry of Health, as well as international representatives from WHO, gathered to discuss actionable recommendations for eliminating trans fats. The event also marked the launch of the ‘Healthy Oil Consortium.’

Key Attendees and DiscussionsHealth Secretary-cum-Commissioner of Food Safety, Chandigarh Administration, Ajay Chagti; Dr. Yutaro Setoya from WHO; and Dr Abhinav Trikha, Mission Director of the National Health Mission and Commissioner of Food Safety, Punjab, attended the meeting and participated in key discussions.
