Rigorous Food Safety Inspections in Kerala’s New Year Markets

Statewide Efforts to Ensure Quality and Compliance

The Food Safety Department in Kerala conducted 1,340 targeted inspections in New Year markets, Health Minister Veena George announced. These inspections are in addition to the 2,861 checks conducted statewide by 252 squads during the Christmas season. To address the holiday demand, 109 special squads ensured compliance in food production and sales. Officials suspended 21 non-compliant establishments and issued rectification notices to 182 others.

Stringent Monitoring of Food Production and Sales

Inspectors closely monitored bakeries, small-scale production units, and enterprises producing cakes, wine, and other bakery items. They examined raw materials such as sugar, coconut oil, and ice cream for quality. Inspections extended to fish and meat markets, where food safety officers collected samples for analysis. Officials collected 39 statutory samples and 284 surveillance samples to evaluate food quality and safety standards.

Leadership and Coordination

The Food Safety Commissioner coordinated the statewide initiative, with Food Safety Joint Commissioner Jacob Thomas and Deputy Commissioner S. Aji leading inspection efforts. Minister Veena George reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining high standards in food safety and ensuring consumer protection during festive seasons.
