Cheap Cool Drinks Under Scanner in Salem as Temperatures Soar

Key Update

Food safety officials in Salem have cautioned the public about the rise in substandard cool drinks on the market during the peak summer season. Over the past month, temperatures in Salem and Namakkal have crossed 100°F, pushing people to rely on fruits, cool drinks, and ice creams to stay hydrated. Between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., demand spikes as people, especially those working outdoors or travelling for work, turn to quick refreshment options like fruit juices and packaged drinks.

Sub-Standard Products Enter the Market

With rising demand, manufacturers have begun supplying low-quality cool drinks to local shops. Many consumers opt for these beverages as they are cheaper than fresh juices or tender coconut water. However, officials have found that several products fail to meet basic safety and labelling standards. As per regulations set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, packaged drinks must clearly display manufacturing and expiry dates, the FSSAI licence number, and the manufacturer’s address. They should also be prepared using safe, treated water, such as RO water.

Strict Monitoring and Enforcement

The Food Safety Department has formed five special teams to inspect shops and identify violations. Authorities have warned that any shop found selling sub-standard cool drinks or ice creams will face strict legal action. Offenders may face penalties ranging from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh, as per food safety laws. Officials have urged consumers to stay alert and avoid buying beverages that lack proper labelling or appear suspicious. Checking product details before consumption remains a simple but effective way to prevent health risks during the summer.
