Suspected Fish Poisoning in Neyyattinkara Sends 35 to Hospital

Suspected Fish Poisoning in Neyyattinkara Sends 35 to Hospital

Key Update

Thirty-five people, including children, developed symptoms of food poisoning after eating red snapper fish, locally known as chemballi, in Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. They experienced vomiting, diarrhoea, and severe stomach pain shortly after consuming the meal. The affected families had bought the fish from coastal markets in Kanjiramkulam, Oorambu, Chamavila, and Kuruvadu. Investigators traced the reason for fish poisoning to a wholesale market in Pulluvila, which supplies seafood to these areas.

Officials Launch Investigation

The Food Safety Department began an investigation to find the source of contamination. Inspectors collected fish samples from the affected markets and started testing for possible toxins and chemical residues. Health officials suspect that traders might have used preservatives such as formalin to prevent spoilage during long-distance transport from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. They are examining the supply chain to identify lapses in handling and storage.

Patients Recovering Under Observation

Doctors at Dr Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College Hospital in Karakonam and Neyyattinkara Taluk Hospital are treating the affected individuals. Officials confirmed that all patients remain stable and are recovering under medical supervision.
