Thoothukudi Rs 20 Biryani Restaurant’s License Suspended

Thoothukudi Rs 20 Biryani Restaurant’s License Suspended

Report

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has temporarily suspended the license of a Thoothukudi restaurant in Tamilnadu that sells chicken biryani at Rs 20, following complaints of unhygienic food preparation and misleading claims about the dish. The suspension comes after a complaint to District Collector K Elambahavath raised concerns about the quality of the biryani offered by the restaurant.

Inspection and Findings by Food Safety Officer

In response to the complaint, a team led by District Food Safety Officer Dr. Mariappan inspected the restaurant and its manufacturing facility in Davispuram, near Thalamuthunagar. Dr Mariappan found that while the chicken meat showed no foreign substances or unpleasant odours, the kitchen conditions were unsanitary. Cats and dogs were seen roaming inside the preparation area, raising hygiene concerns.

Meat Sample Sent for Testing and Further Actions Pending

Dr. Mariappan collected a sample of the chicken meat and sent it for lab testing. He stated that further actions would depend on the test results. Along with the hygiene concerns, Dr Mariappan found that the biryani sold at the restaurant contained only ground chicken, not chunks, deceiving customers by labelling the dish as “chicken biryani.”

Supplier Under Investigation and Hygiene Violations Detected

Dr. Mariappan also discovered that the restaurant lacked proper documentation, such as bills or receipts for raw material purchases and sales transactions. This raised further concerns about the restaurant’s compliance with food safety standards. The restaurant’s chicken supplier will also be questioned about the quality and sourcing of the product.

Temporary Suspension and Path to Reinstatement

Dr. Mariappan ordered the temporary suspension of the restaurant’s food safety license due to these violations. However, the restaurant owner can lift the suspension by complying with the regulations set by the Food Safety Standards Authority of India Act. The restaurant must meet all food safety requirements to have its license reinstated.
