TTD Partners with CSIR-CFTRI for Safer Prasadams

Key Update

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI), Mysuru, to introduce scientific expertise into its food systems while preserving the traditional character of its sacred prasadams and food offerings.

According to a TTD press release, the partnership aims to ensure that all food and prasadams prepared and distributed by the temple administration meet the highest standards of safety, nutrition, and quality without compromising their cultural and religious significance.

Focus on Food Safety and Quality Assurance

As part of the collaboration, TTD and CSIR-CFTRI will jointly develop and implement robust quality-control standards, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and monitoring mechanisms covering food procurement, preparation, and distribution.  The initiative seeks to strengthen food safety practices across TTD’s large-scale food operations and ensure greater consistency in the quality of offerings distributed to devotees.

Scientific Upgrades for Food Systems

Under the agreement, CSIR-CFTRI will provide technical guidance on upgrading storage, testing, and procurement systems. The institute will recommend scientifically validated technologies and best-practice workflows to minimise contamination risks and improve operational efficiency. The collaboration will also focus on enhancing quality monitoring systems through modern food safety and testing approaches.

Preserving the Traditional character of Prasadams

A key objective of the partnership is to maintain the authenticity of TTD’s renowned prasadams while improving their safety and shelf life. Researchers from CSIR-CFTRI will work on packaging solutions and shelf-life enhancement measures designed to improve product stability without altering the traditional taste, texture, or cultural value of the offerings.

Training and Capacity Building

The agreement also includes a comprehensive capacity-building programme for TTD personnel involved in food preparation and quality control. CSIR-CFTRI will train food analysts and food handlers in advanced analytical techniques, sampling procedures, contaminant detection methods, and specialised tests, including ghee purity assessment and aroma profiling.

Expert Support and  Continuous Monitoring

To support implementation, senior scientists from CSIR-CFTRI will conduct regular visits to TTD facilities. The experts will assist with validation studies, monitor progress, and recommend improvements in storage management, procurement planning, and food safety systems. Through the collaboration, TTD aims to combine traditional practices with scientific expertise, strengthening food safety and quality standards while preserving the heritage and authenticity of its sacred food offerings.
