Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered restaurants and eateries to ensure that both chefs and waitstaff wear masks and gloves as part of strict hygiene measures to counter food tampering. Additionally, hotels and restaurants will be required to install CCTV cameras. This directive comes in response to reports of food tampering in the state, including incidents of spitting and adding urine to food, according to PTI.
Official Statement
Adityanath described the inclusion of human waste in food products as “disgusting” and directed strict action against individuals who contaminate food with human waste or other unclean substances, as stated in an official announcement quoted by PTI. Chef Montu Saini, who has worked at the former President’s residence, noted that similar measures have been implemented following directives from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). “The FSSAI has also established guidelines for medical check-ups of those handling food to ensure food safety and hygiene,” said Chef Saini.
The Website Says
According to FSSAI’s 2017 Safe Food Handling & Hygiene Booklet for Food Handlers, food workers are required to maintain impeccable cleanliness. “All food handlers must wear appropriate, clean attire, a face mask, gloves, a head covering, and footwear, all of which must be provided by the food business operator. The food business operator must also ensure that food handlers always cover their heads while working and use only hygienic protective clothing. Street shoes should not be worn while handling and preparing food in the kitchen,” the website states.
