Report
To combat the rising incidents of spitting and urine contamination in food, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the Uttar Pradesh government will implement two new regulations targeting unhygienic food practices.
The upcoming Prevention of False and Anti-Harmony Activities and Spitting Prohibition Ordinance 2024, along with the UP Prevention of Contamination in Food (Consumer Right to Know) Ordinance 2024, will impose severe penalties on individuals who contaminate food through spitting or other unhygienic behaviours.
These regulations will also guarantee that consumers receive complete information about how their food is prepared and handled.
Sources indicate that Yogi Adityanath will meet with key officials—including the Additional Chief Secretary for Home Affairs, the Law Officer, and the Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh—on Tuesday to finalize the ordinances. The proposed legislation aims to enhance the state’s consumer safeguards and food safety measures.
Incidents that Invited Actions
These actions follow recent arrests related to food contamination. For instance, authorities arrested a restaurant owner after a viral video showed a teenager spitting on rotis in Saharanpur last month. Similarly, police apprehended two individuals in Noida for contaminating juice with urine, and another seller in Ghaziabad faced arrest for allegedly adding saliva to fruit juice.
In a high-level meeting last September, Yogi Adityanath condemned such practices, stating they undermine public trust. He mandated that operators, owners, and managers display their names and addresses prominently at all food establishments, with penalties for non-compliance.
The government will implement these regulations soon, imposing strict punishments on those responsible for food contamination. This initiative will improve safety measures and accountability within the food sector.
