Key Update
Authorities in Thiruvananthapuram have identified a marine toxin as the likely cause behind the deaths of two people who consumed food from a hotel in Vizhinjam. The chemical analysis report clearly rules out food poisoning. The incident dates back to February 16, when the victims, residents of the area, ate at the hotel. Following their deaths, officials carried out a detailed investigation. Post-mortem findings had already indicated that food poisoning was not responsible.
Fish Roe Under Suspicion
Investigators found that all members of the affected family had consumed fish roe during the meal. Based on available evidence, officials now believe that a marine toxin present in the fish eggs may have caused the fatalities. Authorities tested leftover food from the hotel, water samples, and fish sourced from a market in Tamil Nadu. However, they found no signs of contamination that could explain the deaths. Officials also noted that they could not obtain samples of the exact food consumed by the victims, which limited the investigation.
Experts Flag Tetrodotoxin Risk
Experts warn that certain fish eggs may contain tetrodotoxin, a highly potent toxin that does not break down during cooking. Exposure to this toxin can lead to serious health complications and even death. Local chemical laboratories cannot currently detect marine toxins, prompting the need for more advanced testing to confirm the findings.
Based on the report, the Food Safety Commissioner will decide whether to permit the hotel to reopen. Authorities have also summoned the hotel owners for further proceedings.
What Are Marine Toxins?
Marine toxins are naturally occurring toxic substances found in fish, shellfish, and certain marine microorganisms. These toxins can accumulate in seafood and may cause poisoning when consumed by humans.
