Food Safety on Wheels Arrives in Ladakh’s Nubra Valley

Introduction

Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has made significant strides in enhancing food safety across India. As part of its ongoing efforts, the Food Safety on Wheels (FSW) team recently conducted a two-day awareness campaign in Nubra Valley, located at an impressive altitude of 17,582 feet, accessible via Khardung La in Ladakh. The event, held on September 27 and 28, marked a significant initiative to promote food safety in remote, high-altitude areas, showing how FSW has successfully reached even the most inaccessible regions.

Report

The campaign aimed to ensure that safe food regulations were followed by immediately testing food samples like milk, spices, and juices. Over the two days, the team collected and tested 35 food samples, including 12 milk samples, 8 spice samples, and 9 juice samples. They also collected 6 water samples from the area for detailed microbial testing.

A key part of the campaign involved educating local Food Business Operators (FBOs) about the importance of adhering to food safety guidelines, obtaining necessary registrations and licenses, and understanding the consequences of non-compliance. The FSW team emphasized hygiene standards and handed out informational materials to help FBOs implement better food safety practices.

Bottomline

FSSAI’s Food Safety on Wheels program operates mobile units that test common adulterants in everyday food items like milk, water, and edible oils. Beyond testing, these units raise awareness and offer training and certification programs for food handlers and supervisors. FSW primarily supports small food businesses, especially in remote and underserved areas. By deploying these mobile units, FSSAI enables field workers in various states to extend their reach and impact, driving greater food safety across India.
