FAO to Broadcast Technical Seminar on AI for Food Safety

Report

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations will host a hybrid technical seminar on artificial intelligence (AI) for food safety on November 6, 2024. FAO will hold the event at its headquarters in Rome, Italy, and broadcast it via Microsoft Teams.

Interested participants can register to join the online stream.

Highlights

The seminar will examine the current state of AI, weighing its benefits and drawbacks in food safety. FAO, together with Wageningen Food Safety Research, will share insights from a literature review on AI’s practical uses in food safety management. They will cover key areas such as AI’s role in identifying bacteria, coordinating recalls, supporting inspections, forecasting outbreaks, detecting new pathogens, and managing antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Experts from international agencies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA), and Italy’s Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale (IZS), will present examples of innovative AI applications that enhance food safety. The workshop will also address important considerations for regulatory bodies as they work toward gradually adopting AI solutions for food safety management.
