Report
After eating momos from a roadside stand in Banjara Hills in Hyderabad, a woman died, and her two young daughters, along with fifty others, were hospitalized. Reports indicate that she died earlier this week, while the other patients are recovering in hospitals across the city.
On October 25, Reshma Begum, 31, and her daughters, aged 12 and 14, ate momos from a street vendor in Chintal Basti, Khairatabad. Soon after the meal, they began suffering from severe food poisoning, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. They initially believed rest would improve their condition and delayed seeking medical help. However, as their health worsened, they rushed to the hospital on October 27. Tragically, Begum died on the way, while her daughters are receiving treatment.
Street Vendor Arrested
The police arrested the street vendor after food safety authorities filed a complaint. Investigators found that the vendor operated without an FSSAI license and prepared food under unsanitary conditions. They sent food samples from the site to the state food laboratory for testing and suspended the vendor’s operations. A food safety official confirmed that officials also collected stool samples and blood cultures from the victims to determine the exact cause of the food poisoning.
Experts warn that many street vendors selling momos frequently neglect essential food safety practices, increasing the risk of food poisoning and other health issues. This negligence stems from a widespread lack of hygiene awareness among street food vendors.
