Food Poisoning at Alampady School
On November 21, 2024, 35 students from Alampady Government Higher Secondary School in Chengala Panchayat, kasargod, Kerala, were hospitalized after suspected food poisoning from milk served in the mid-day meal program. Affected students from the Lower and Upper Primary sections showed symptoms like nausea, dizziness, and restlessness. Out of 570 students who consumed the milk, 35 fell ill, sixteen students went to Chaitra Hospital, and nineteen students were taken to General Hospital. All students were stabilized, with none in critical condition.
Investigation and Immediate Measures
District Medical Officer A.V. Ramdas led a Rapid Response Team (RRT) meeting to address the incident. Initial findings suggest the milk was the likely cause, and samples have been sent for testing. The school has suspended milk distribution as a precaution. Health education sessions were held for parents and staff to raise awareness about foodborne diseases. Concerns were raised about the milk’s boiling process and kitchen cleanliness. MLA N.A. Nellikunnu and local leaders visited the hospital to monitor the situation and offer support.
