Swiggy has released its year-end report for 2024, offering key insights into food trends based on data from January 1 to November 22, 2024. Biryani remains the most ordered dish on the platform, with a staggering 83 million orders. This means that every minute, Swiggy processes 158 biryani orders—about two orders per second. Following biryani in popularity, dosa secured 23 million orders.

Chicken Biryani: The Most Popular Version

Swiggy’s report reveals that chicken biryani is the most popular variant, accounting for 49 million of the total biryani orders. The southern states of India dominate biryani orders, with Hyderabad leading the pack. The city recorded 9.7 million biryani orders, followed by Bengaluru with 7.7 million and Chennai with 4.6 million.

Late-Night and Train Orders: Biryani’s Rising Popularity

Biryani isn’t just popular during regular meal times. It ranked second for late-night cravings, with chicken burgers taking the top spot between 12 and 2 am. The dish also made a mark on trains, as Swiggy’s partnership with IRCTC enables delivery at specific stations along train routes.

Ramadan and New Year’s Day: Special Moments for Biryani Lovers

Earlier in 2024, Swiggy revealed that it delivered over 6 million biryanis during Ramadan. Hyderabad once again emerged as the top city, with over a million orders during this period. In a fun twist, a Swiggy user in Kolkata started the year with a biryani order at 4:01 am on January 1, 2024.

Biryani’s Popularity Beyond Swiggy

The love for biryani extends beyond Swiggy. Zomato, Swiggy’s rival, also highlighted biryani as the most ordered dish in its 2023 year-end review. Zomato reported that biryani was the top choice on New Year’s Eve that year as well.
