Report
The Kerala Food Safety Department has launched the Modernisation of Food Streets initiative to create hygienic and visually appealing food hubs across the state. In the first phase, the department is developing four model food streets at Shankhumukham (Thiruvananthapuram), Panampilly Nagar (Ernakulam), Kottakunnu (Malappuram), and Kozhikode Beach.
State Prioritises Food Safety and Visual Appeal
Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed that the government has allocated ₹1 crore for each location. The initiative focuses on delivering safe, high-quality food in clean and attractive environments. Trained and FoSTaC-certified staff will operate all outlets, ensuring full compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The project gives priority to sanitation and infrastructure. Workers are building toilets, proper waste management systems, and creating a pleasant atmosphere for visitors. Nirmithi Kendra is nearing completion of the work at Shankhumukham.
Government Agencies Work Together
Various local agencies are actively contributing to the development of the remaining sites. GCDA is overseeing work in Ernakulam, DTPC in Malappuram, and the Kozhikode Corporation in Kozhikode. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the National Health Mission (NHM) are also supporting the food streets project. The department is working in close coordination with district administrations and local self-governments to ensure effective implementation.
