Fake Coconut Oil? Kerala’s Operation Nalikera Says No!

Rising Prices Raise Red Flags

Soaring coconut oil prices in recent months have strained household budgets and opened the door for spurious edible oils to enter the market disguised as coconut oil. These cheaper alternatives pose significant health risks, prompting officials to act. Food Safety officials in Kerala have launched Operation Nalikera, a three-day statewide special drive, to ensure the purity of coconut oil in the market. They inspected 980 coconut oil manufacturing units and wholesale and retail trading centres during the crackdown. The aim was to detect adulteration amid rising prices and growing demand.

Notices and Samples Collected

As part of Operation Nalikera, officials issued 25 rectification notices and seven compounding notices to outlets for various violations. They also collected 161 statutory samples and 277 surveillance samples of coconut oil, which will undergo laboratory tests to confirm purity. The Health Department advise consumers to stay alert and avoid coconut oil sold at unusually low prices. Authorities urged the public to report any suspicion about the quality of coconut oil to the Food Safety wing through the toll-free number 1800 425 1125.

Strict Action Against Violators

Officials directed manufacturers and sellers to ensure that all coconut oil in the market meets safety standards. They warned that strict legal action would follow against anyone found selling adulterated products.
