FSSAI Trains 3 Lakh+ Street Vendors to Ensure Safer Street Eats

Key Update

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has trained more than three lakh street food vendors across the country, the government informed Parliament, aiming to raise food safety standards nationwide.

FoSTaC Programme Empowers Street Food Vendors Nationwide

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav told the Lok Sabha that FSSAI launched the Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) programme in 2017 to provide formal training to those in the street food sector. The specialised “Street Food Vending” course under FoSTaC has already reached over 3 lakh vendors, equipping them with knowledge of hygiene and safety practices.

Jadhav said FSSAI complements training with strict inspections, awareness drives, and enforcement actions under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. As part of the Eat Right India Movement, the authority has certified 405 “Eat Right Street Food Hubs” to promote safe, hygienic food options in public eating spaces.

Mobile Labs Strengthen Food Testing in Remote Areas

To extend its reach, FSSAI has deployed 305 Mobile Food Testing Laboratories (MFTLs) across 35 states and union territories. These mobile units enable on-the-spot food testing and spread food safety awareness in remote regions.
