FSSAI Orders Recall of Wonderland Raisins Over Unsafe Pesticide Residues

Key Update

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered the recall of Wonderland Raisins, manufactured by Sun Organic Industries Private Limited, after laboratory tests detected pesticide residues above permitted limits. Authorities declared the product unsafe for human consumption under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The company must immediately withdraw the affected batch from the market.

Two laboratories detect excess pesticide residues

The recall followed a regulatory food safety investigation after a sample of Wonderland Raisins failed to meet the requirements of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. A Central Food Safety Officer from FSSAI’s Northern Region Office collected the sample for testing.

The National Food Laboratory (NFL), Ghaziabad, detected pesticide residues above the maximum permitted limits. The Centre for Food Research & Analysis (CFRA), NIFTEM-Kundli, FSSAI’s designated referral laboratory, later confirmed the findings. Based on the laboratory results, authorities declared the product unsafe under Section 3(1)(zz)(xii) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

FSSAI orders immediate recall

Following the findings, the competent authority directed Sun Organic Industries Private Limited to:

  • Immediately recall the affected batch of Wonderland Raisins from the market.
  • Submit recall information and periodic status reports to FSSAI.
  • Maintain complete records of recovered products.
  • Implement corrective and preventive measures to prevent similar incidents.
  • Comply with the Food Safety and Standards (Food Recall Procedure) Regulations, 2017.

The recall will help prevent further sale or consumption of the affected product and remove it from the food supply chain. Consumers who purchased Wonderland Raisins from the affected batch should not consume the product. They should follow the official recall instructions and check the batch or lot number and expiry date against the details provided in the recall notice.

Why Pesticide Residue Limits Matter

Pesticides help protect crops from pests and diseases. However, food can retain pesticide residues when producers use these chemicals improperly or fail to follow prescribed safety requirements. Food safety authorities set maximum residue limits (MRLs) to control the amount of pesticide residue legally permitted in food. Exceeding these limits can trigger regulatory action to protect consumers.

The Wonderland Raisins recall highlights the importance of laboratory testing, regulatory surveillance and effective food recalls in keeping unsafe products out of the market. It also reinforces the responsibility of food businesses to maintain safety standards throughout the food supply chain.
