FSSAI Flags Hygiene Lapses in GCT Women’s Hostel Kitchen, Coimbatore

Key Update

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered a private caterer at the Government College of Technology (GCT), Coimbatore, to fix hygiene issues in the women’s hostel kitchen. FSSAI Designated Officer Dr T. Anuradha inspected the facility after receiving reports about unhygienic conditions. Officials found several violations during the inspection. The kitchen lacked proper lighting, and the caterer had not maintained records of medical check-ups for food handlers or pest control activities. Despite holding a valid FSSAI licence, the caterer failed to comply with key hygiene standards.

FSSAI Sets 15-Day Deadline for Correction

Dr Anuradha said the department had issued an improvement notice, giving the caterer 15 days to fix all deficiencies. “We have directed the caterer to take immediate corrective steps and maintain hygiene as per FSSAI norms,” she said.

Colleges Told to Ensure Clean Hostel Kitchens

After the inspection at the GCT, Dr Anuradha and the Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education N. Shenbagalakshmi, held an online meeting with more than 50 arts and science colleges in Coimbatore. They instructed principals and hostel wardens to ensure that hostel kitchens follow proper hygiene practices and use safe, quality ingredients in food preparation.
