Key Update
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced plans to introduce a dedicated mechanism to curb food adulteration in the state. The government aims to strengthen enforcement and monitoring amid growing concerns about adulterated food products.
The Chief Minister said the proposed system will function on the lines of specialised enforcement bodies such as the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement and the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency. Authorities created these agencies to tackle drug offences and protect public assets such as lakes from encroachments. Revanth Reddy said a similar model could enable authorities to take faster and more coordinated action against food adulteration.
Studying Existing Laws Before Implementation
The state government plans to review existing anti-adulteration laws and enforcement mechanisms nationwide before introducing the new system. Officials aim to identify effective regulatory practices and implement stronger measures to improve food safety oversight. The proposed mechanism will focus on improving inspections, strengthening enforcement, and ensuring greater accountability among food businesses. The government aims to enhance monitoring across the food supply chain to reduce the risk of adulterated food reaching consumers.
Link to Food Distribution and Food Quality
The Chief Minister also referred to the state’s public distribution initiatives, noting that the government introduced a scheme to supply fine rice through the ration system to improve the quality of food received by beneficiaries. Earlier, coarse rice distributed through the system was often left unused, leading to misuse and diversion. To support the new distribution policy, the government announced a ₹500 bonus per quintal to encourage farmers to grow fine paddy. The state also plans to promote awareness about crop diversification and encourage farmers to shift towards commercial and alternative crops as part of broader agricultural reforms.
