Key Update
FSSAI has launched a unified digital approval system called the Electronic Product and Claim Approval Application System (ePAAS), marking a major shift for India’s food industry. From June 1, 2026, companies must submit all applications related to product approvals, claims, nutraceuticals, novel ingredients, vegan products, Foods for Special Medical Purposes (FSMPs) and non-specified foods through this single-window platform. For the dairy sector, the move could simplify approvals and encourage faster innovation in value-added products.
Faster Path for New Dairy Products
India’s dairy industry has often faced delays due to complicated approval procedures and unclear regulations. Through ePAAS, FSSAI aims to create a transparent and fully digital system for approvals involving new ingredients, functional claims and emerging food technologies.
The platform could especially support categories such as high-protein drinks, probiotic dairy products, lactose-free milk, sports nutrition, immunity-focused products and functional dairy snacks. Many of these products require scientific validation and regulatory approval before launch. The new system may also benefit startups and smaller dairy brands that previously struggled with complex approval processes. With a standardised application system, startups, cooperatives and large dairy companies can now follow the same approval pathway.
Functional and Clinical Nutrition Could Grow
ePAAS may encourage dairy companies to expand into functional and clinical nutrition products, including fortified whey beverages, probiotic yoghurts, gut-health drinks and dairy-based medical nutrition products. The FSMP category could open new opportunities for products designed for elderly consumers, patients recovering from illness and people with digestive or metabolic disorders. Since India imports many clinical nutrition products, domestic dairy companies could tap into this growing market.
The platform also covers Ayurveda Aahara approvals, which could help companies develop products such as turmeric milk, herbal buttermilk, ashwagandha milk beverages and immunity-focused fermented drinks with better regulatory clarity.
Push for Better Research and Documentation
The new framework encourages companies to invest in scientific studies, ingredient validation and proper documentation. This could help Indian dairy brands build credibility in both domestic and export markets. The shift may also create new demand for laboratories, food consultants and R&D centres involved in testing, claim substantiation and regulatory support.
A Step Toward Science-Led Dairy Innovation
With ePAAS, FSSAI is preparing India’s dairy industry for the next phase of growth, where dairy products increasingly combine nutrition, wellness and food technology. India’s dairy sector has long led in production volumes. The new system could now help the industry move toward higher-value, science-backed products.
