Dubai Launches UAE’s First Foodborne Virus Detection Lab

Dubai Launches UAE’s First Foodborne Virus Detection Lab

Key Update

Dubai Municipality has launched the UAE’s first dedicated laboratory for detecting foodborne viruses, strengthening Dubai’s food safety and public health infrastructure.

The new ViruGenetics Lab, established at Dubai Central Laboratory, uses advanced genomic technologies to identify harmful viruses in food products with high precision and speed. Under normal conditions, the lab can process around 60 samples daily, with the capacity increasing to 100 samples during emergencies or outbreak situations.

Faster Detection for Better Food Safety Response

The facility delivers test results within record turnaround times, helping authorities accelerate inspections and make faster, data-driven decisions during food safety incidents. Rapid detection becomes especially important when potentially contaminated food products have already entered the supply chain.

The laboratory uses digital PCR (dPCR) technology, one of the world’s most advanced molecular testing methods. This technology offers exceptional sensitivity and accuracy in detecting viral pathogens, including norovirus, hepatitis A, and hepatitis E viruses.

Advanced Testing for Complex Food Samples

The ViruGenetics Lab can effectively analyse complex food samples such as dairy products, seafood, juices, and fresh produce. Unlike traditional testing methods, dPCR technology maintains accuracy even when analytical inhibitors interfere with results.

The laboratory follows ISO/IEC 17025 standards to ensure high levels of quality, reliability, and testing accuracy.

Supporting Research and Public Health

Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department at Dubai Municipality, said the new facility forms part of the civic body’s broader initiative to establish specialised laboratories equipped with advanced global technologies. She added that the launch reinforces Dubai’s goal of becoming a global leader in food safety and health oversight.

Beyond routine testing, the ViruGenetics Lab will also serve as a scientific research platform. The facility will collaborate with universities and research centres to build a national database of foodborne viruses and support research in this field.

Officials said the lab will strengthen the health safety ecosystem by providing precise genetic data on viruses linked to the food chain, enabling authorities to take proactive, science-based decisions.

The facility now joins Dubai Central Laboratory’s growing portfolio of advanced food control systems aligned with international best practices.
