Experts Highlight Food Safety and Sustainability at Global Food Science Conference

The International Conference on Food Science and Nutrition, held at Stella Maris College, Chennai, brought together experts who emphasized the importance of food safety, sustainable agriculture, and global collaboration to safeguard public health and ensure food security. During the conference’s final session, Sanu Jacob, Director of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, addressed the need for the Indian government to prioritize food safety. He explained that access to nutritious food is key to fostering a healthier, more productive population.

Collective Responsibility for Food Quality

Sanu Jacob stressed that ensuring food safety is a collective responsibility, from production to consumption. He pointed out the importance of proper food handling, preservation, and taking necessary steps to prevent contamination during food production. Jacob also highlighted the interconnectedness of food with fields such as agriculture, biochemistry, and sociology. He further encouraged students to explore career opportunities in food safety and related industries to address the growing need for expertise in these areas.

Expert Contributions on Food Safety, Export, and Climate Change

The conference also featured contributions from other experts, including Sridevi Annapurna Singh from the Central Food Technological Research Institute, Shobhana Kumar from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, and Imbenzi George, Honorary Consul General of Kenya in British Columbia, Canada. Topics discussed included the health benefits of traditional culinary practices, enhancing food exports, and addressing food safety challenges in the context of climate change and human rights.
