Comprehensive Update on Infant Formula Nutrients

In the coming months, the FDA will release the first comprehensive update and assessment of infant formula nutrients since 1998. Acting FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner stated, “The FDA is committed to ensuring that mothers, caregivers, and individuals reliant on infant formula can trust that these products are safe, consistently available, and provide essential nutrients for health and development during critical stages of life.”

Encouraging New Formula Development

The FDA is promoting the creation of new baby formulas and providing more transparent information about formula ingredients. The FDA is collaborating with the National Institutes of Health and other scientific organizations to address gaps in research on the health effects of formula feeding.

Addressing Market Weaknesses Through Partnerships

In January, the FDA outlined its strategy to overhaul infant formula production, emphasizing its partnership with multiple government agencies to address weaknesses in the infant formula market.
