Food Safety Inspections Reveal Major Violations at Prominent Hyderabad Restaurants

Report

Food safety teams from the Commissioner of Food Safety inspected Shahi Dastarkhan, Bademiyan Kabab, and Khan-E-Khas, three prominent food business operators (FBOs) in Lakdi ka Pul, near Hyderabad, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The inspections uncovered several violations at all three establishments.

Shahi Dastarkhan

Inspectors identified multiple hygiene and structural issues, including greasy walls, ceilings with flaking particles, broken tiles on patchy flooring, and stagnant water. The kitchen lacked insect-proof screens, allowing pests to enter, and inspectors found live cockroaches in the area. In the storeroom, they discovered expired food items such as Mango Masala, Coconut Milk, and Keora water, which they immediately discarded. Accumulated food waste had caused drains to clog, leading to stagnant wastewater.

Khan-E-Khas

At Khan-E-Khas, inspectors identified several lapses, including missing pest control records, medical fitness certificates, and water analysis reports. Damaged flooring with broken tiles and stagnant water created unsanitary conditions, while the absence of insect-proof screens increased the risk of contamination. Refrigerators were found in an unhygienic state, and vegetarian and non-vegetarian items were stored together, violating food safety standards. Rat faeces discovered on shelves used for storing raw food materials suggested a potential infestation. The kitchen’s design also failed to provide adequate space for proper cleaning and maintenance, further compounding the hygiene issues.

Bademiyan Kabab

Inspectors reported that the management had failed to display a copy of the food license on the premises. They observed cobwebs in the kitchen and found that food stored in refrigerators was not properly labelled. The team noted the absence of pest control records, medical fitness certificates, and water analysis reports. Inspectors also discovered synthetic food colours, which were suspected to be used in kababs and Chinese dishes, and discarded them. Additionally, food handlers were not wearing the required protective gear such as hair caps and gloves.
