FSSAI Changes Infant Food Labelling Rules, Drops Mandatory RDA Declaration

FSSAI Changes Infant Food Labelling Rules, Drops Mandatory RDA Declaration

Key Update

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has revised labelling rules for infant nutrition products and removed the requirement to declare Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) percentages on these products. Under the updated regulations, manufacturers no longer need to mention the “per serve percentage contribution” to RDA or the number of servings per pack for products covered under the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020.

Move Aims to Reduce Consumer Confusion

FSSAI said the change recognises that infant nutrition products are usually consumed under medical guidance and that infants have nutritional needs very different from standard adult dietary requirements shown on regular food labels. The regulator introduced the change to avoid confusion among parents and consumers while improving clarity in infant nutrition labelling.

New Rules for Fortified Foods

Alongside the changes in infant food labelling, FSSAI has also standardised branding requirements for fortified food products across India. Under the latest 2026 labelling regulations, all fortified food products must display the prescribed fortification logo along with the words “fortified with…” followed by the name of the nutrient added to the product.

‘Sampoorna Poshan Swasth Jeevan’ Tagline Allowed

Manufacturers can also use the tagline “Sampoorna Poshan Swasth Jeevan” below the fortification logo to help consumers easily identify nutrient-enriched foods on store shelves. According to the notification, every food package fortified under the Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018, must carry the required logo and fortification declaration on the label.
