Report
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is actively ensuring safe and hygienic food for millions of devotees at the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj. It is leading food safety efforts through the deployment of Food Safety Officers (FSOs), Mobile Food Testing Labs (Food Safety on Wheels), and public awareness campaigns.
Mobile Food Testing Labs Ensure Instant Food Safety Checks
In collaboration with the Food Safety and Drug Administration of Uttar Pradesh, FSSAI has deployed 10 Mobile Food Testing Labs staffed by food analysts across the Maha Kumbh region. These labs immediately test food items for contamination and spoilage, ensuring the safety of food sold at the fair. FSSAI is also educating Food Business Operators (FBOs), street food vendors, and the public on proper food safety practices to promote a secure food environment at the Mela.
Comprehensive Food Safety Oversight Across the Fair
The fair is divided into five zones and 25 sectors, with Food Safety Officers (FSOs) overseeing hygiene and safety in each sector. FSSAI has assigned 56 FSOs, including five Chief Food Safety Officers (CFSOs), to monitor the enforcement of food safety regulations. FSOs are stationed in each sector, while CFSOs manage the zones to ensure consistent and effective enforcement. A central office at Sankat Mochan Marg in Sector 24 coordinates all food safety operations.
Regular Inspections for Food Quality at Hotels and Stalls
FSSAI regularly inspects hotels, dhabas, and small food stalls at the fairgrounds to ensure food quality. The inspection team promptly addresses food safety complaints and ensures vendors follow strict guidelines for cooking methods and raw ingredient quality. FSSAI also collects food samples, such as rice, sugar, and wheat flour, from distribution and storage sites across the fairgrounds. It tests these samples at the Regional Public Health Laboratory in Varanasi to ensure they meet safety standards before reaching the public.
FSSAI Pavilion Raises Awareness of Food Safety
To further engage with devotees and vendors, FSSAI has set up an interactive pavilion at the fair. The pavilion features Nukkad Natak performances focused on safe food practices, as well as interactive quizzes on food safety and nutrition. FSSAI officials use this platform to educate visitors about food adulteration, licensing, training, and the importance of hygienic food practices.
Government’s Commitment to Public Health and Safety
Through these proactive measures, FSSAI demonstrates the government’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding public health and food safety at the Maha Kumbh Mela. These initiatives not only ensure the well-being of millions of devotees but also foster a culture of food safety awareness among vendors and the public.
