Hyderabad Authorities Expose Major Coconut Powder Adulteration Operation

Report

Food Safety Officers, working with the Special Operations Team (SOT) of Hyderabad City Police, conducted an unannounced inspection and uncovered a major operation involving the adulteration of coconut powder in Begum Bazar, Hyderabad. They seized 60,050 kilograms of adulterated coconut powder valued at approximately ₹92.47 lakh.

The inspection targeted Akash Trading Co., where Food Business Operators (FBOs) repacked coconut powder under various brand names, violating the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006. Investigators found that they mixed imported desiccated coconut powder with loose, non-desiccated coconut powder to produce an impure product.

Strict Action Ahead

Authorities described desiccated coconut as dried and finely shredded, containing no moisture and offering a long shelf life. In contrast, non-desiccated coconut retains some moisture, undergoes minimal processing, and spoils more quickly. Authorities stressed that they would take strict action against those who compromise food quality and deceive consumers. Investigators are working to uncover the full scope of the operation and its distribution network, according to reports.
