Kerala’s first GBS death as cases rise nationwide

Report

A 58-year-old man from Ernakulam has become Kerala’s first victim of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), passing away after a prolonged treatment at Kottayam Medical College. His death marks the state’s first reported fatality linked to the autoimmune disorder. The death in Kerala adds to the growing toll of GBS-related fatalities in India, with 14 reported deaths so far. Recent cases have been reported in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, highlighting a troubling national trend.

What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the body’s nerves, causing paralysis, numbness, and weakness. Often triggered by infections such as gastrointestinal illnesses or viruses like Zika, GBS has no known cure, though treatments help manage symptoms. Recovery can take months or even years for some individuals.

GBS Cases in Kerala and India

While rare, GBS is not unknown in Kerala, with 20-25 cases typically reported annually. Most patients recover with proper treatment, but the recent deaths across the country have raised significant public health concerns. Health officials are investigating the rising number of cases and fatalities.
