Key Update
A food safety scare at a bakery on Magadi Main Road in Bengaluru has brought hygiene practices at local eateries back into focus. A 32-year-old cab driver reported finding a lizard inside a paneer tikka roll he had purchased, triggering a health scare and a police case. The customer had stopped at the bakery for a quick meal and ordered a paneer tikka roll after his preferred option was unavailable. While eating, he discovered a lizard inside the food. He immediately confronted the staff, who reportedly denied any lapse and claimed their premises were clean. The situation escalated when the customer, visibly distressed, began to feel unwell and vomited while inspecting the premises.
Health Impact and Hospitalisation
The customer was taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors admitted him after he developed symptoms such as diarrhoea. He remained under observation for 24 hours. The incident highlights the potential health risks associated with contaminated food, especially when foreign objects or poor hygiene are involved.
Case Under Investigation
Police have registered a case under provisions related to the negligent handling of potentially harmful substances. However, the investigation faces a challenge, as no photographic evidence of the contamination was submitted. Authorities continue to examine the case. This incident underscores the importance of maintaining strict hygiene standards in food preparation and handling. Contamination can occur due to poor storage, unclean kitchens, or a lack of pest control, posing serious health risks to consumers.
What Consumers Should Do
Food safety experts advise consumers to remain alert while eating out. If they find any foreign object in food, they should:
- Avoid discarding the item immediately
- Take clear photographs as evidence
- Preserve packaging or receipts
- Report the issue to the establishment and local food safety authorities
A Reminder for Safer Practices
The case serves as a reminder for both food businesses and consumers. While establishments must follow proper hygiene and pest control measures, consumers should stay vigilant to reduce the risk of foodborne illness and ensure accountability.
