Shawaya Meal Sends 12 to Hospital in Kerala

People Fall Ill After Eating Shawarma and Mayonnaise

At least 12 people sought medical treatment after reportedly developing symptoms of suspected food poisoning following the consumption of shawaya, shawarma and mayonnaise from Signature Dish in Kadakkavoor, Thiruvananthapuram district. They experienced vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, dizziness and, in some cases, breathing difficulty.

Doctors treated them at the Government Taluk Hospital in Chirayinkeezhu and nearby private hospitals. After primary treatment, doctors discharged some patients. No serious cases have been reported.

Panchayat Shuts Down Restaurant

Following complaints, the Kadakkavoor Panchayat ordered the restaurant to close. Panchayat officials stated that the food outlet was operating without the required local body clearance, although the adjoining supermarket, V-Mart, had the necessary approval. Meanwhile, the police registered a case based on a complaint filed by one of the affected individuals.

Authorities Continue Investigation

Food Safety Department officials said the establishment held a valid FSSAI licence and health cards. However, because the panchayat had already closed the restaurant, officials could not collect food samples or inspect hygiene conditions. Based on preliminary observations, they suspect the mayonnaise may have caused the illness, but they will confirm the exact cause only after completing the investigation.

Food Safety Reminder

The incident highlights the importance of proper food handling, safe preparation of high-risk foods such as mayonnaise, and compliance with both food safety regulations and local licensing requirements. Authorities have advised the public to seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms of foodborne illness after eating outside.
