Report
The Food Safety Department in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu has launched a proactive campaign to educate consumers on key food safety norms before they choose a restaurant. Acting on suggestions from the Food Safety and Drug Administration, the department aims to promote informed dining choices and encourage responsible food business practices. As part of the campaign, officials are urging consumers to verify whether restaurants are registered with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). They also advise diners to check for hygiene rating certificates, and the Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) Certificate. To amplify the message, the department has released a catchy advertisement jingle on social media, actively raising awareness among the public.
Consumers Must Check More Than Just the License
S. Mariappan, Designated Food Safety Officer in Thoothukudi, stated, “As declared in the 2025–2026 Budget session, we are actively implementing this project. Our teams are engaging directly with the public in Thoothukudi, Kovilpatti, and surrounding areas to raise awareness.” He noted that while most people notice the FSSAI license displayed at restaurants, they often overlook other essential documents such as the hygiene rating and FoSTaC certificates. “These certifications are equally important for identifying safe and compliant food establishments,” Mariappan added.
Mandatory Display Boards & Regular Checks
The campaign emphasises Food Safety display Boards compulsorily at all eateries. These boards provide essential information, including license numbers and hygiene practices followed by the establishment. To reinforce the campaign’s goals, the department is also organising meetings with food business operators. Alongside public awareness, officials are conducting regular inspections, especially at meat shops and slaughterhouses, to ensure food safety and public health under the ‘Eat Right Thoothukudi’ mission.
