Key Update
Two people died, and another remains in critical condition following suspected food poisoning linked to a restaurant in Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram, on Tuesday. The incident has triggered a food safety investigation and enforcement action against the establishment. The deceased have been identified as Shaji (50) and Rasheeda Beevi (58), both natives of Nilamel. Shaji’s wife, Regimol, is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.
Illness After Seafood Meal
According to police, the trio, along with two children, consumed seafood at Asmak Hotel on Monday night. While returning home, Shaji reportedly began feeling unwell and was rushed to the medical college hospital, where he later died. Rasheeda Beevi was admitted to a hospital in Parippally but could not be saved. The two children who accompanied them did not develop symptoms and are reported to be safe.
Food Safety Inspection Underway
Food safety officials reached the restaurant and initiated a detailed inspection to assess hygiene standards, food handling practices, and storage conditions. Authorities have shut and sealed the hotel pending further investigation. Health officials are awaiting the postmortem reports to determine the exact cause of death. Laboratory analysis of food samples, if collected, will help establish whether contamination, improper storage, or other lapses contributed to the incident.
Police stated that they will register a case against the hotel owner and those responsible for operating the establishment based on the inspection findings and complaints filed by the victims’ relatives.
Food Safety Concerns
Seafood, in particular, requires strict temperature control, hygienic handling, and proper storage to prevent bacterial growth and toxin formation. Any lapse in cold chain maintenance, cross-contamination, or delayed refrigeration can significantly increase the risk of foodborne illness. The incident underscores the importance of routine inspections, strict compliance with food safety standards, and immediate reporting of suspected food poisoning cases to prevent further harm. Authorities have assured that appropriate action will follow once the investigation and laboratory findings are complete.
