Gujarat reported a major food poisoning outbreak after a wedding feast in Abhlod village, Dahod district, leaving over 400 guests ill, raising serious concerns about food safety at large gatherings.

Mass Illness After Wedding Feast

Nearly 1,000 guests attended the event and consumed dishes such as paneer curry and mango juice. Within hours, more than 400 people—including children, elderly individuals, and women—developed symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. As their condition worsened, many required hospitalisation, prompting an emergency medical response. Due to limited ambulance availability, families transported several patients in private vehicles, causing overcrowding at nearby hospitals, including Zydus Hospital.

Investigation and Suspected Cause

Health officials quickly reached the venue, collected food samples, and launched an investigation. Although they have not yet confirmed the exact cause, officials suspect bacterial contamination due to improper food handling, poor storage, or the use of unsafe water. They are also examining specific items like paneer dishes and mango juice, with final confirmation pending laboratory results.

High Risk at Large Gatherings

Large events like weddings involve bulk food preparation, which increases contamination risks when organisers fail to maintain proper hygiene. Poor personal hygiene, cross-contamination, and inadequate temperature control—especially in hot weather—can significantly increase the chances of foodborne illness.

Authorities Step Up Action

Food safety and health teams are actively inspecting catering practices, kitchen conditions, and food sourcing. Authorities have deployed doctors from across the region to manage the situation, while hospitals continue to remain on alert. Officials have stated that they will take strict action based on the investigation findings, reinforcing the need for stronger food safety compliance at mass gatherings.
