80 Hospitalised After Maharashtra Street Food Scare

Dozens Fall Ill After Eating Street Food

Around 80 people, including eight children, were hospitalised after developing suspected food poisoning following the consumption of food from a roadside eatery in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra. Police and health authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The incident occurred on June 17 at Famous Shawarma, a street food stall in the Khandupada area in Maharashtra. According to officials, all those who later sought medical treatment had eaten food from the stall at around 6 p.m. Customers who consumed shawarma, pizza, and falooda developed symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, and fatigue within a few hours.

Patients Shifted to Hospital

Many initially visited a nearby primary health centre. However, as their condition failed to improve, doctors referred them to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital for further treatment, said Vinayak, Senior Police Inspector at Shanti Nagar Police Station.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Madhuri Panhare said all 80 patients, including the eight children, are in stable condition. Medical teams have treated them with intravenous (IV) fluids, injections, antibiotics, and other supportive medications. While a few patients developed fever, none has experienced serious complications, she added.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have collected blood and stool samples from the patients and sent them for laboratory analysis. Investigators are also examining the food served at the stall. Officials said they will determine the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning only after receiving the laboratory test results. Meanwhile, the police investigation remains ongoing.
