Delhi Government to Intensify Food Adulteration Inspections Ahead of Festive Season

Introduction

The Delhi government will increase inspections for food adulteration during the festive season. During Durga Puja, food safety officers collected around 500 samples of food items, including buckwheat flour, oil, and dairy products, from various locations across the city for testing.

Report

The Food Safety Department has directed its 11 district units to conduct pre-Diwali inspections, targeting commonly adulterated items like khoya, milk, ghee, sweets, and dairy products. Officials highlighted the importance of these checks, which happen annually to protect public health during festivals.

District units are on high alert, tasked with performing random inspections to detect adulteration, which tends to rise during festivals due to increased demand. A senior official confirmed that teams will inspect and collect samples if they find signs of adulteration.

The department oversees the production, storage, sale, and distribution of food in Delhi, under the Food Safety Act. It ensures food safety by conducting surprise inspections, raids, and sampling to verify that food items meet safety standards and are properly labelled.
