Report
On Friday, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda informed the Lok Sabha that the government found no violation of sugar content regulations in Nestlé’s wheat-based baby food. He explained that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had taken suo motu cognizance of concerns regarding the product’s sugar content, triggered by a report from a Swiss NGO.
FSSAI’s Investigations and Findings
In response, FSSAI conducted thorough evaluations at the production sites on April 29 and 30, 2024. After carefully examining the product, the authorities confirmed that the sugar content per serving was in full compliance with the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020.
Alignment with Global Infant Nutrition Standards
These regulations, designed to ensure the safety and nutritional quality of infant food products, are aligned with global standards established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. This body, which incorporates recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), sets food safety guidelines to ensure that products like baby food meet the necessary nutritional requirements while safeguarding infant health. The regulations specifically limit sugar content to appropriate levels, ensuring that the products provide essential energy without exceeding safe thresholds for young consumers.
