Renowned Surgeon Warns of Health Risks from 10-Minute Food Delivery Services

Overview

Renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr Manan Vora has raised concerns about the health risks associated with the rapid 10-minute food delivery services offered by platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, and Zepto. He warns that these ultra-fast meals, often ultra-processed, can increase health risks, including a 12% rise in cancer risk and a 10% increase in heart-related diseases.

The Challenge of Ultra-Rapid Food Delivery

In a recent LinkedIn post, Dr. Vora highlighted the alarming rise of ultra-quick food delivery services in India. Platforms like Zepto Cafe, Zomato’s Bistro, and Swiggy Bolt compete to deliver meals in just 10 minutes. To meet this demand, they prepare meals in under three minutes, relying on ultra-processed, ready-to-eat foods that are pre-cooked, frozen, and reheated in a microwave. Dr. Vora describes this model as a “nutritional time bomb.”

Health Risks of 10-Minute Meals

The rapid delivery methods expose consumers to several health risks:

  • High Levels of Preservatives and Stabilizers: These meals often contain preservatives and stabilizers to extend shelf life, which could pose potential health hazards.
  • Nutrient Degradation: Freezing and reheating these meals cause significant nutrient loss, making them nutritionally inferior.
  • Compromised Food Safety: The rush to prepare meals quickly increases the likelihood of shortcuts in cleanliness and food safety.
  • Increased Trans Fats: These ultra-processed foods often contain high levels of trans fats, which are linked to a higher risk of heart disease.

Dr. Vora’s concerns reflect growing awareness about the long-term risks of ultra-processed foods, which contribute to obesity, metabolic disorders, and other health issues. The convenience of quick delivery encourages consumers to choose calorie-rich, nutrient-poor options, which could have lasting health consequences.

Systemic Health Consequences

Experts argue that the shift toward rapid food delivery impacts more than individual health. Shantanu Deshpande, CEO of Bombay Shaving Company, warned that the increasing reliance on cheap, processed foods could lead to a public health crisis. He calls for stronger food standards and urges consumers to prioritize fresh, homemade meals over fast, processed alternatives.
