Unlicensed Supermarkets, Sweet Shop Sealed in Sivakasi

Key Update

Food Safety Officers closed two supermarkets and a sweet shop in Sivakasi after finding that they were operating without the mandatory food safety licence. The action followed a surprise inspection led by Virudhunagar District Designated Food Safety Officer S. Mariappan. During checks at supermarkets on Chairman Shanmugam Road, officials seized 4 kg of expired tomato sauce and 3 kg of chips. They also confiscated 5 kg of ghee with incorrect labelling and 3 kg of adulterated tea powder.

Sweet Shop Exceeded Licence Limits

At a popular sweet shop located on the SIDCO premises along the Sivakasi–Srivilliputhur Road, officials found that the unit was manufacturing multiple varieties of sweets despite holding a licence for only two items.

Sweets Made at Retail-only Premises

Inspectors also detected sweet manufacturing at another establishment licensed only for retail sale, violating food safety norms. The officials seized 20 kg of snacks and 40 kg of sweets that did not carry manufacturing dates on their labels.
