FSSAI Digitalises Food Recalls via FoSCoS for Faster, Transparent Action

Overview

FSSAI has directed the implementation of a Food Recall’ module in the FoSCoS system to streamline recall procedures in line with the Food Safety and Standards (Food Recall Procedure) Regulations, 2017. The system aims to improve tracking, ensure clear consumer communication, and facilitate proper handling of recalled food products, including retrieval, destruction, or reprocessing.

Key Highlights of the Order

For Enforcement Authorities (DOs/CLAs): Enforcement authorities must initiate all recall cases through their FoSCoS login. They must also monitor, update, and manage all recall-related actions within the system.

For Food Business Operators (FBOs): FBOs must create recall cases in FoSCoS when they initiate a recall. They must also record and update all follow-up actions related to the recall process.

For Consumers and Stakeholders: FoSCoS will display all recall information on its homepage under the “Food Recall” section, allowing consumers and stakeholders to access updates easily. Each recall case will receive a unique identification number to enable proper tracking, monitoring, and transparency.

Why This Matters for Food Businesses

The new system introduces a structured digital recall mechanism. It strengthens centralised monitoring, improves transparency for consumers, and ensures better compliance with recall regulations.
