Key Update
FSSAI has seized stocks worth over ₹31 lakh of a branded “alkaline water” product after laboratory tests detected fulvic acid, a substance not permitted in packaged drinking water under current food safety regulations. FSSAI acted after a consumer filed a complaint through the Food Safety Connect portal. Following the complaint, officials from the western regional office inspected the manufacturing facility in Savli, Vadodara, Gujarat.
Officials Detect Multiple Irregularities
During the inspection, food safety officers found several violations. They identified missing ingredient declarations, the absence of the product name on the front label, and visible black particles in the bottled water. They also observed sediment deposits and an unusual blackish-brown discolouration in the product. Subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of fulvic acid. Investigators concluded that the substance likely entered the product through added black mineral ingredients and did not occur naturally in the water.
FSSAI Initiates Action Under Food Safety Law
Following the findings, FSSAI seized the stock and initiated proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The authority reiterated that all packaged drinking water must comply strictly with safety and labelling requirements before being sold in the market.
