Telangana Books Five Eateries, Destroys 10 kg of Raw Egg Mayonnaise

The Telangana Food Safety Department intensified enforcement of the state’s ban on raw egg-based mayonnaise through a statewide inspection drive. Food Safety Officers inspected 131 food establishments across Telangana and identified five eateries producing or storing mayonnaise made with raw eggs in violation of the ban. During the inspections, officials seized and destroyed 10 kg of raw egg-based and broken-egg mayonnaise and initiated action against the violating establishments.

Enforcement Drive

The Telangana government imposed a one-year ban on the production, storage, and sale of raw egg-based mayonnaise through a notification issued on 30 October 2025 to reduce food safety risks. The Food Safety Department has initiated adjudication proceedings against the five establishments for violating the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and continues to inspect food businesses to enforce the ban.

Why Raw Egg Mayonnaise Is Banned

Food safety authorities warn that raw egg mayonnaise can support the rapid growth of harmful bacteria such as Salmonella when food businesses fail to use pasteurised eggs or store the product under proper refrigeration. These unsafe practices increase the risk of food poisoning, prompting the state to impose the ban as a public health measure. The Telangana Food Safety Department has also urged citizens to report food safety violations through its official grievance channels, including its social media platform and helpline, to strengthen enforcement across the state.

Consumer Takeaway

Consumers should choose mayonnaise prepared with pasteurised eggs or commercially manufactured products from licensed food businesses. They should also ensure mayonnaise-based foods remain properly refrigerated and consume them within the recommended time to minimise the risk of foodborne illness.

Key Takeaway

Telangana’s latest enforcement drive demonstrates the state’s continued focus on food safety by removing prohibited products from the market and promoting compliance with food safety regulations.
