800 Kg Fake Khoya Busted in UP: Easy Home Tests to Spot Adulteration

Key Update

In a major crackdown, the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety Department raided an illegal or fake khoya manufacturing unit in Sardhana, Meerut, and seized a huge quantity of adulterated materials. According to information shared by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), officials recovered nearly 70 tins of refined oil and eight sacks of skimmed milk powder during the raid. The team also destroyed around 800 kilograms of substandard and adulterated khoya on-site to stop it from reaching consumers. Additionally, officials collected nine samples for laboratory testing.

How to Identify Adulterated Khoya

Smell Test:

Pure khoya gives off a rich, milky aroma, while adulterated khoya may have a sour or artificial smell.

Texture Test:

Authentic khoya feels soft and slightly grainy. If it feels sticky or overly hard, it may contain non-dairy substances.

Warm water Test:

Mix a spoonful of khoya in warm water and add a few drops of iodine solution. If the mixture turns blue, it indicates the presence of starch. Pure khoya will not change colour.

How to Prepare Khoya at Home

To make pure homemade khoya, boil the milk in a heavy-bottomed pan, then simmer it over low heat. Stir continuously to prevent burning or sticking. As the milk thickens over 30 to 40 minutes, scrape the milk solids from the sides of the pan and mix them back in. The khoya is ready when the milk reduces to a soft, dough-like consistency with a light yellow colour.
