Significant Update
Students at Delhi University’s South Campus staged protests after a student reportedly found a cockroach in chutney served at the boys’ hostel mess. The incident took place during Tuesday’s breakfast service, where chutney accompanied uttapam. A first-year MA History student from Bihar noticed the insect while collecting food from the counter and immediately informed the hostel caretaker.
Caretaker’s Casual Response Sparks Outrage
According to students, the caretaker responded casually and advised the student to take another plate instead of addressing the matter seriously. The reaction intensified anger among students, many of whom claimed that hygiene-related complaints in the hostel mess were becoming frequent. Soon after the incident, students from Sabarmati and Aravali hostels launched protests on campus, demanding improved food safety standards and stricter monitoring of mess operations.
Earlier Incident Raised Similar Concerns
The protest also drew attention to an earlier incident reported about 15 days ago, in which students allegedly found a gutka wrapper in the filling of a dosa served during breakfast. Photos and videos of the contaminated food have since circulated widely on social media, further fuelling concerns over hygiene standards in the hostel kitchen.
Students Demand Better Hygiene Standards
Students said the repeated incidents reflect poor food handling and inadequate hygiene practices in the mess facility. They urged the university authorities to take immediate corrective measures and ensure safer food for hostel residents.
