A consumer complaint alleging that a worm was found inside an egg ordered through Blinkit has prompted a food safety inspection at the quick-commerce platform’s facility in Mangaluru, Karnataka.

The consumer reportedly approached Karnataka Health Minister U.T. Khader after receiving damaged eggs and alleged that one of the eggs contained a worm. Khader subsequently directed food safety officials to inspect the facility that supplied the order.

Officials Find Broken Eggs at Blinkit Facility

Acting on the complaint, officials from the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department inspected Blinkit’s facility at Falnir Square in Mangaluru. During the inspection, they found packets containing broken eggs and directed the facility staff to remove and dispose of the affected stock.

Officials then temporarily sealed the food storage room to allow thorough cleaning and sanitisation. The department said it would seek an explanation from Blinkit’s management and decide on further action based on the inspection findings and the company’s response.

Authorities Yet to Confirm Worm Allegation

While the complaint alleged that a worm was present inside one of the delivered eggs, authorities have not confirmed that the worm originated from the Blinkit facility. The inspection also did not reportedly find a worm.

Instead, officials confirmed the presence of broken eggs at the facility and ordered their disposal. This distinction is important as the investigation continues.

Blinkit Facility Asked to Explain

The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department plans to issue a notice to the Blinkit facility, seeking an explanation for the incident. Officials said they would consider further action based on the inspection findings and the response from the establishment.

The incident has also drawn attention to the handling and storage of perishable food products at quick-commerce facilities. Damaged eggshells can increase the risk of contamination, making proper inspection, storage and handling important before such products reach consumers.

What Consumers Should Check

The incident highlights the importance of checking perishable food items immediately after delivery. Consumers should avoid using eggs with cracked or broken shells and check the condition of food products before consuming them.

If they receive damaged or questionable products, consumers should retain the order details, receipt and photographs and report the issue to the platform and relevant food safety authorities.
