Authorities Uncover Fake Ghee Operation in Agra, Seize 25,500 kg

Report

In early January, authorities in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, uncovered a facility that produced fake ghee. Located in the Tajganj area along Shamsabad Road, the factory mixed harmful substances like urea, palm oil, and synthetic flavours to imitate well-known dairy brands. Officials confiscated 25,500 kilograms of fake ghee and raw materials used in its production, marking a significant step forward in combating food fraud.

The Fake Ghee Operation

Prominent media reports reveal that the facility operated under the name “Shyam Agro.” Police discovered packaging materials for 18 popular brands, along with large quantities of palm oil, urea, refined oils, and Vanaspati ghee. The factory blended these ingredients to create fake ghee, which it then packaged and sold under trusted dairy brand labels. The counterfeit ghee, priced at just ₹175 per kilogram, was sold to consumers for up to ₹650 per kilogram. Authorities found 50 cans labelled as Amul, ready for shipment to Meerut, exposing the vast distribution network behind the operation.

A Large-Scale Operation

Although officially registered in Gwalior, the factory operated in Agra and maintained multiple storage facilities across the city. The counterfeit ghee spread to various districts within Uttar Pradesh and even other states, highlighting the widespread nature of the illicit operation. During the raid, authorities arrested five individuals, including the factory manager. The investigation continues, with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) working to ensure that severe legal action is taken. The operation aimed to deceive consumers into buying low-quality products at inflated prices, posing significant health risks.

Legal Action and Future Prevention

Officials plan to file legal charges against those involved under the Food Safety and Standards Act. They are also working to strengthen regulations to prevent similar fraudulent activities in the future. The scale of this operation underscores the urgent need for vigilance and enforcement to protect public health.
