Report
Coca-Cola is facing scrutiny after recalling products in the UK and the US due to contamination issues. These include excessive chlorate levels and plastic fragments, with the company acting quickly to protect public health and ensure product quality.
UK Recall Due to Chlorate Contamination
In the UK, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners recalled select drinks after tests revealed elevated chlorate levels. While the health risk is low for most consumers, those with iodine deficiencies or heightened sensitivity to chlorate could be more affected. The recall specifically impacts tall cans of Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Coca-Cola Zero, Sprite Zero, and Appletiser 100% Apple Juice Gently Sparkling, all with specific best-before dates. Consumers are advised to check production codes between 328 GE and 338 GE.
US Recall for Plastic Contamination
In the US, a recall was issued for 864 12-packs of Coca-Cola Original Taste in Illinois and Wisconsin due to possible plastic contamination. The recall affects cans with the date code SEP2925MDA, stamped between 11:00 and 12:00. The FDA classified this as a Class II recall, meaning the health risks are temporary or reversible.
Previous European Recalls
Earlier in January 2025, Coca-Cola recalled products in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands due to similar chlorate concerns. Affected brands included Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, and Minute Maid. The company reassured consumers that the associated risk was minimal.
Coca-Cola’s Response
Coca-Cola has encouraged consumers to return affected products for refunds. In the UK, customers can contact Coca-Cola at 0800 227711. The company stressed that the recall is part of its commitment to high-quality products and consumer safety. These recalls highlight how even major brands can face quality control issues. Coca-Cola’s quick action and coordination with health agencies helped prevent broader health risks.
