Coca-Cola Recalls Drinks Over Chlorate Contamination

Report

Coca-Cola recall specific batches of its beverages in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands after routine safety checks at its Ghent facility in Belgium revealed high chlorate levels. The affected products include Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Minute Maid, Fuze Tea, Nalu, Royal Bliss, and Tropico, with production codes ranging from “328 GE” to “338 GE.”

Health Concerns: Impact on Thyroid Function

Chlorate, a byproduct of chlorine-based disinfectants used in water treatment, can impact thyroid function and kidney health, especially in children. Health agencies in Belgium and the Netherlands have classified the risk as “serious,” advising consumers to avoid the recalled drinks and return them for refunds. The European Union’s rapid alert system has also informed authorities in Denmark, Portugal, and Romania to check for potentially affected products.

Coca-Cola’s Response and Global Implications

Coca-Cola attributed the issue to a specific container used in the water treatment process at its Ghent plant. While no recalls were issued in Germany, France, or Britain, a small quantity was shipped to those countries, prompting regulatory reviews. Despite growing concerns, experts suggest that harmful effects would require consuming large amounts of the affected beverages.

Production and Market Response

The Ghent facility operates 24/7, processing 66,000 glass bottles and 120,000 cans per hour. In response to the recall, the UK’s Food Standards Agency is now reviewing Coca-Cola products in its market to ensure consumer safety.
