IIIT Hyderabad Launches Investigation After Frog Found in Mess Food

Report

Students at IIIT Hyderabad were surprised and scared when a frog was discovered in the food served at Kadamba Mess on campus. The situation was revealed when a student named Ram Manohar posted on the X platform, saying, “I am shocked and horrified!” Discovered a frog in the food served at Kadamba Mess (IIIT Hyderabad) today. This is not okay and endangers people’s health! @cfs_telangana, act promptly!”

The students and faculty at IIIT Hyderabad asked the mess authorities to take prompt action to prevent the occurrence of similar incidents.

Official Statement

IIIT Hyderabad’s hostel administration called the incident “completely unacceptable” and announced the initiation of an internal investigation.

Prof. Radhika Krishnan, Associate Professor at IIIT Hyderabad and Chairperson of the mess committee, expressed deep regret over the incident.  “This is an event that should never have occurred. We are investigating the matter to determine what went wrong and are committed to ensuring it doesn’t happen again. Following the inquiry, we will take appropriate action against those involved.”

She also mentioned that the institute will consult specialists to identify necessary changes to ensure student safety.

Prior Incidents

Students at the institute have previously complained about pests in their food and unsanitary conditions in the mess. In May, students and high school participants at the Panini Linguistics Olympiad were hospitalized due to food poisoning after consuming hostel meals.

Prof. Krishnan noted that after the May incident, food samples were tested for 10 consecutive days, and no issues were found with the food served in the hostel mess.

“We are working to identify the source of the current issue. In response to past problems, we redesigned the dining area, installed round-the-clock hot water, and implemented pest control measures in the kitchen and dining space. Additionally, we close the dining areas for deep cleaning and pest control during the summer and maintain regular pest management,” she explained.
